The Institute of Optometry (historically the London Refraction Hospital) at 56-62 Newington Causeway is situated in the middle of the Newington Triangle, an area for which the Southwark local authority has given planning permission for a major redevelopment.

The Institute has therefore been obliged to cease seeing patients at our long-standing home which to our great regret is due for demolition from September 2025. In the present economic climate, it has not proved feasible to find an alternative location to continue our clinical activities.

Continuity of Care

We are naturally aware of our duty of care towards our many loyal patients so we have actively pursued arrangements to preserve the clinical records of everyone who has been seen at the Institute within the last few years. Patients are, of course, free to register with any practice of their choice but all recent patient records have been securely transferred to Crofton Park Opticians, an independent practice in South East London.

Crofton Park Opticians is led by Pritesh Patel BOptom (Hons) MCOptom DipTp(IP) DipGlauc Prof. Cert. Medical Retina, an experienced optometrist and glaucoma practitioner at St Thomas' Hospital. His team offers both NHS and private eye care, and we are completely confident that patients will receive safe, thorough, and compassionate support under their care.

Preserving our Legacy

We are also making arrangements that any charitable funds which the Institute holds will in the future continue to be used in a way which benefits both patients and the optometric profession. Documents explaining the historical legacy of the Institute are now preserved in the BOA Museum of the College of Optometrists.
